At our Equine group you will learn the art of Equine Stewardship. A practice that carries many life lessons through the care, trust, and bonds created with our horses.
“Our rescue horses are trauma survivors and are healing with you, every step of the way.
This is a chance to not just build life skills, but to build a bond that will last forever. Here, you won’t just learn horsemanship. You will learn to be a healthier, happier human, with the backdrop or horsemanship.”
Meet Our Horses
Meet Sonia and Gigi, the resident horses at the Restwell property and stars of the Equine Program. Sonia and Gigi are both rescue horses, so when we work together with them and heal our nervous systems, we share that healing with them, too. We practice natural horsemanship and endeavor to rewrite the book on interacting with horses – from a place of empathy, patience, and seeing them as sentient, beautiful beings with their own feelings, own preferences, and their own voice. You just have to learn to speak their language, which is part of what we help you learn to do as well!
Sonya
-
Sonia is Pinto horse, brown and white, and we think is a mix of Saddle Bred and Tennessee Walker. We don’t know her exact birthday, but we think she’s around 22 years old. Getting older for a horse, as they generally live to be in their late 20’s to 30’s, though she’s in great shape for her age.
-
Long ago, she was owned by an older lady who adored her, but when she passed, she got placed with family members, who meant no harm, but did not know much about horse care. So, Sonia spent the majority of her life undernourished, and left in a pasture alone. As herd animals, having other horses around is critical to their mental health and development. So, she still has some anxiety and social issues, but considering what she’s been through, she’s quite well-adjusted. We adopted her sometime around last March, so she’s pretty new to this more cushy way of life.
Gigi
-
Gigi, our fierce white-spotted pony is a Pony of America breed, about 12 years old, but quite the Matron of the herd. Gigi has been rescued for quite a bit longer and has been with Live.Grow.Share for a couple years now.
-
About 5-6 years ago, she came from a hoarding situation where 70-80 horses were kept and uncared for. Around 10 of them were found deceased when they found Gigi in mud up to her chest, overgrown hooves, malnourished and pregnant. From there, she was adopted by a nice lady in Roseburg, who helped her have her foal (baby horse), which survived and still lives in Roseburg. Gigi is now healthy, sassy, and has a lot of strong opinions. But, she is also a natural at Equine Therapy and Skill Building and seizes the hearts of all who meet her.

Yugen
Position/Program: Equine Therapist
Pronouns: they/them
Pets: I have a service dog nicknamed Potato as well as ~20 horses at a stables i help manage.
3 favorite things: the stars, the forest at nighttime, philosophy
Something I like to do outside of work: hike in the woods with my pup, practice yoga and meditation, or tattooing!
Something interesting about me: I have five published books
Why I do what I do: I know what it is like to live in a chronic state of sheer disconnect when all one is craving is connection. I do what I do to be able to shine a light in the darkness i have grown all too familiar in. I hope to embody in my existence a path of healing through struggles involving dissociation, complex trauma, self-harm, neurodivergence, and navigating life as a transgender individual. I aim to be a safe space for others to be able to settle at Home within their own self.
Position/Program: Equine-Assisted Peer Support Manager
Pronouns: He/Him/His
Pets: None currently, but in the past, I have had horses, dogs, cats, swimming turtles, leopard geckos, rabbits, and a hamster.
3 favorite things: Nature and the great outdoors, all animals (but especially horses), and reading (mostly nonfiction, but also an occasional story)Something I like to do outside of work: Wild food foraging and wildcrafting. Anything and everything from berries, mushrooms, seeds, nuts, greens, seaweed, herbs, and flowers. Even the occasional meat source like shellfish and sea-snails.
Something interesting about me: I love to travel and explore. I have been to 31 states, from the east coast to the west coast of Canada, Puerto Rico, the Azores, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and England, and once a short layover in Iceland. The most time spent abroad has been in Scotland - almost a year spread through three tripsWhy I do what I do: I’ve always felt a deep calling to help people. My experience as a nurse has given me the privilege to walk with many people as they faced pain, illness, addiction, and fear of the unknown. But as the years have passed, I found myself drawn to more wholistic ways of facilitating health and well-being. My personal journey has lead me to rediscover my connection to Nature, both the green spaces and the animals, which has brought me deeper joy, meaning, and peace than all the medications, therapy, personal coaching, and even bad habits and distractions could even come close to. I have a special affinity for horses and have all my life. Their big, grounded presence is
instantly calming and centering. They respond to energy with such keen precision and absolute purity, that it is like looking in a mirror through their eyes. An almost psychic and definitely empathic experience. They teach and heal. They are masters at bringing you into your body and into the present moment. I have seen them transform people in so many ways, in and out of the therapy arena. As a facilitator and a guide through this unique relationship with horses, my goal is to show you that you don’t need fixing, only to learn to come back to YOURSELF, fully.
